With everyone from celebs to TikTokers getting into pilates, it’s no secret that this low-impact workout is a total game changer. The exercise modality is known for its ability to tone muscles and strengthen the core, and it’s a perfect way to stretch out after a long day at work or while watching your favorite show on Netflix. Plus, it’s super easy to do (no special equipment needed) and can be done at home or in a class with an instructor to help keep you on track and safe from injury.
But there are a few myths surrounding this beloved exercise that need to be dispelled. Whether it’s because of the perceived difficulty level of pilates or its reputation as being a workout for old people, women only, or less fit individuals — there is no reason to believe any of these stereotypes. “Pilates has been proven to be an effective workout for all types of people,” lululemon MIRROR trainer and Pilates instructor Patricia Sabulis says. “It’s a great workout to do for all fitness levels because you can always make it more challenging by taking the time to move slower and really focus on your form.”
Plus, unlike other forms of exercise (crunches anyone?), Pilates is designed to engage your core with every movement. In fact, lululemon MIRROR instructor Michael King says the abs are engaged in 99 percent of the exercises that you do in Pilates — a key element to the effectiveness of the workout.
